This is the section of the web site where we use more words to go
beyond the assertions and explore the why question.
By basic needs we mean food, clothing, shelter, health and security.
The first four correspond to the first level in Maslow's Hierarchy of
Needs. Security corresponds to the second level. We have
specifically called attention to health as part of the physiological needs
because preventable diseases (malnutrition) and infectious diseases
(AIDS) create so much misery in the world.
You may wonder why we picked the first two levels, instead of either
stopping with the first level or including the higher levels. There are a
few considerations. Reaching the first level is essentially a physical,
material problem and has been adequately addressed in many
advanced countries. Reaching the second level requires civil society.
We now know the ingredients necessary to create civil society. It
appears that our ability to satisfy the first two levels is a well
understood problem. There is hope of being able to share known
solutions with all humans.
The third, fourth and fifth levels of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs have
cultural components and have to be interpreted by the various peoples
of the world for themselves. This goal is at best difficult in advanced
countries and even harder to transfer proven methods if any! Clearly
these levels are just too high to aim for!
We could have stopped with the physiological level of needs as our
goal. However, we feel that at the societal level, the lack of security for
some often threatens the physiological needs for others. A common
example is an insecure dictator who can tolerate no hint of dissent and
chooses to deprive people of their physiological needs so he may
satisfy his security needs. Besides, we feel that the same strategy of
education can help reach both levels: physiological & security.
Maslow's first two levels for all humans by 2060 is our common goal!
