This is the section of the web site where we use more words to go
beyond the assertions and explore the why question.

Let us start with the bit about the historic opportunity.  We don't mean
this as a hyperbole.  Right now, the world possesses the material
means to amplify human capabilities to produce the material goods
necessary to satisfy the basic human needs.  If we had 9 billion
educated people in the world today, we know the means to feed,
clothe, house, secure ourselves and lead healthy lives.  The materially
advanced countries are the existence proof that a small fraction of our
society is able to take care of the basic needs for the entire population.
Think about farming, textile, construction, hospitals and law
enforcement as a percentage of our economy.  Our health system, at
least in the US does not promote prevention and hence is saddled
with the extreme expenses of treatment of preventable lifestyle
diseases.  Our law enforcement is able to keep our cities safe only by
turning predominantly uneducated minorities into unproductive
expensive inmates.  We all pay a high price for the lack of widespread
education.

How did we come to this "historic" moment?  Ever since the industrial
revolution, we have been getting better at amplifying human physical
ability by using extra energy.  For example, a farmer is now able to
produce more by using farm equipment.  The computer has given us
the means to amplify human mental ability to manipulate information.
The farmer is now able to get better weather reports.  The Internet has
given the means to amplify the human communication ability to learn
from each other.  Farmers in India learn about drip irrigation from
farmers in Israel over the Internet.

The means to amplify human physical, mental and communication
abilities is now available to all.  This has never been possible in
human history.
